POTLATCH TOTE—A Potlatch is a ceremony integral to the governing structure and laws of First Nations. It is a time to redistribute wealth where those holding the Potlatch host a gift-giving feast to affirm or reaffirm their social status, confer status and rank upon individuals, house groups and to establish claims to names, powers and rights to hunting and fishing territories.
Potlatches usually coincide with important social events—marriage, birth, memorial ceremonies. Guests are given gifts as payment for participating by the host. By being at the event and witnessing, the Witnesses help bring what has been said and done into law, into the collective knowledge of the community—and wider communities.
